Aldersgate Mission Educates, Feeds Kids During COVID-19

The pandemic may have slowed things down for them, but it hasn't stopped Aldersgate Mission from reaching its students and families.

Aldersgate Mission is an after school tutoring program for children of Briarfield Community in Hattiesburg and surrounding communities. Using their online Compass Learning software, they teach kids through fun, interactive curriculum that aligns with standard education goals for each kid's grade level.

In this era of quarantine and social distancing, Aldersgate has ensured that the kids they serve who have an appropriate electronic device at home, have access to the Compass Learning application. For those who couldn't access Compass Learning, Aldersgate has presented webinars and provided paperwork their students could work on at home, all in an effort to help supplement learning and stay on track with their primary school lessons.

Additionally, the organization has partnered with Give & Take Kitchen to provide meals-to-go for students.

"If they’re fed, the kids will be able to sustain learning. If they’re hungry…they won’t be able to concentrate. It also gives us a chance to interact with the family and see how the kids are doing [when they pick up their meals]," says Mary Jo Jackson, director of Compass Learning/Edgenuity at Aldersgate.
