United Way of Southeast Mississippi is joining the Giving Tuesday movement, encouraging people to take action to improve their communities and give back in some way on Dec. 3, 2013 – the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. Giving Tuesday will once again leverage social media to create a national movement dedicated to giving, just as Black Friday and Cyber Monday have been positioned to be synonymous with holiday shopping.
Giving Tuesday began last year, harnessing the collective power of thousands of partners – nonprofits, businesses and individuals – to transform how people think about, talk about and participate in giving. On this day, everyone across the country is asked to find a way to give back by donating to a charity, advocating for a cause or volunteering.
Locally, United Way of Southeast Mississippi hopes that Giving Tuesday will help give our current community-wide campaign, which aims to raise $1.310 million, a final push as many of our workplace giving campaigns are wrapping up now.
“I can’t think of a better way to ring in the season by volunteering, donating or advocating for a cause that makes our community a better place to live,” said United Way of Southeast Mississippi Board President Susan Slaughter of Hattiesburg Clinic. “By supporting United Way this holiday season, donors are in turn supporting our local partner agencies and programs that make a difference in the lives of so many each day.”
Kathy Calvin, CEO of the UN Foundation, said, “Giving Tuesday is a counter narrative to Black Friday and Cyber Monday because it reminds us that the spirit of the holiday giving season should be about community and not just consumerism. The most meaningful gift we can give our children, loved ones, friends and neighbors is the commitment to work together to help build a better world.”
To participate in Giving Tuesday, you can donate online here. Or visit the GIVE page of our site for other options.
United Way of Southeast Mississippi is also accepting donations in honor of your loved ones this holiday season. After using the online giving link, include a message with the name and contact information of the person or family you’d like to honor. We will notify the honoree with a personalized Christmas card created by The Arc, a United Way partner agency.
