Meet Anita
Anita Carter applied to become a Habitat homeowner in December 2008 and was approved in February 2009. Anita has been working for Forrest General Hospital for almost 10 years and has been dreaming of homeownership for much longer. Before moving into her Habitat home, she was living with her mother and stepfather in a 3 bedroom house. She and her children had grown accustomed to living out of bags and totes in their small bedrooms. Her dreams of owning a home of her own were not selfish ones, but a reflection of the love and hope she holds for her children.
She wanted to be able to offer her children a better life and future through the stability of owning a home. She wanted to leave a legacy for her children and stated on her application that “I will do whatever it takes to make a better life for [my children].” Now, Anita is a proud homeowner in the Celeste Place subdivision.
After becoming a Habitat homeowner, Anita said the aspect about homeownership of which she is most proud is the fact that she built it herself. She also said her children have truly benefitted, and their attitudes have changed for the better. “The greatest benefit of owning a Habitat home is the investment – in my future and my kids’ future. It’s a great thing.”
