| United Way Garage Sale Coming Soon
| The 16th Annual AOP United Way Santa's Bargain Basement Mega Garage Sale will be held Saturday, Dec. 5, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Southern Miss Payne Center. Anyone who would like to donate items for the garage sale can deliver them to the trailer at the corner of West 4th Street and North 34th Avenue. The men of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity will be at the trailer to assist with unloading items from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday. Tax receipts are available on request. Thanks for your hard work, AOP and Delta Tau Delta! |

Friends for Financial Freedom  |
| Friends for Financial Freedom, a United Way initiative in partnership with Christian Services, The Salvation Army and other groups, has hired a new intern to assist with office work and case management. Grace Hall, a senior at Southern Miss, is minoring in non-profit studies and earning her certification in American Humanics. The internship is funded by a United Way stipend and will provide needed assistance to help the growing program. The goal of the program is to improve financial stability and break the cycle of dependence on federal or state funded assistance. From March to September 2009, the program has had a total of 433 referrals and 43 graduating students. Hall will assist program director Janice Swiggum and complete 300 hours of work to earn her certification.

DREAM

DREAM of Hattiesburg trained 23 volunteers to go into 13 schools and speak to 4,258 students during October's Red Ribbon Week. Red Ribbon Week is the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the country. Students signed a Red Ribbon pledge card making a one-year commitment to keep themselves and their communities drug-free.

Dixie Evans has been recognized by DREAM for outstanding volunteer service. Evans is retiring after 30 years of teaching. During that time, she has volunteered by providing training for tutors and providing service opportunities for youth in DREAM's Senior Optimist Club.

R³SM in partnership with the City of Hattiesburg and the Mississippi Main Street Association held the inaugural Gordon's Creek 5K Walk and 10K Run on Nov. 7. The purpose of the event was to increase awareness of good health along with promoting volunteerism and increasing the visibility of R³SM. The event was a success with over 150 volunteers and over 100 runners or walkers. |

The ARC Buddy Christmas Party will be held Monday, Dec. 14 from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at Court Street United Methodist Church. ARC children and their buddies will eat Christmas dinner, visit with Santa and go caroling. Fun times! |

Agencies Benefit from Legislative Reception
On Oct. 15, United Way of Southeast Mississippi hosted a reception to allow area legislators to meet and visit with United Way's partner agencies. The event gave the agencies an opportunity to talk with state representatives about the services they provide and discuss their needs and concerns.

Special Thanks to Qdoba Mexican Grill
United Way would like to thank Qdoba Mexican Grill for the recent United Way benefit held during the restaurant's grand opening week. Over 700 people ate at Qdoba on Nov. 19 and raised $4,000 for United Way of Southeast Mississippi and our agencies! Way to go! United Way encourages everyone to continue to visit Qdoba and thank partners Travis Bolster and Wes Arrington for their support.

DuBard School for Language Disorders |
|
The Sertoma Club of Hattiesburg recently donated $17,000 to the DuBard School for Language Disorders. Organization members visited the school on Oct. 29 to present the check. The local Sertoma Club has contributed more than $100,000 to the school since 2002.

In October, artist Tom Harmon spent several days at the DuBard School teaching students about the art of paper-making. Harmon served as a guest teacher for the school as part of the Artist in Residence program through a VSA Arts of Mississippi grant. Harmon wears two cochlear implants.
"I've adjusted to my hearing disabilities. In a sense, I live who I am," said Harmon. "I've learned to maximize my strengths, and I hope the students whom I teach will do the same."

About 150 grandparents and other relatives raising children came together at Camp Shelby on Oct. 17 to celebrate the 7th Annual Relatives as Parents Picnic.
